Practice areas

From state-court lawsuits to municipal charges, these are the matters we handle. If you are not sure where your situation fits, call and ask.

Business & Insurance Litigation

Commercial disputes and claims against insurers are a core part of our practice, from coverage questions to litigation that is already in court. Taking on insurance companies is routine work for us, not something we shy away from.

  • Disputes with insurance carriers
  • Disputes between businesses and with companies
  • Lawsuits that are already filed

Criminal Defense

Criminal charges, from municipal court through state court, call for a lawyer who will show up, file, and explain things plainly. John has practiced in Alabama courtrooms since 1977. If you have been charged, or expect to be, call us before you talk to anyone else.

  • Municipal court
  • State court
  • Charges you expect but have not yet received
  • Felony and misdemeanor charges

Family Law

Family cases are court cases with a household attached: divorce, custody, support, and the filings that follow. They are a regular part of the docket, handled locally and in person. Many times the spouses can reach a settlement agreement, which is submitted to the judge for approval and can avoid a court appearance.

  • Divorce
  • Custody
  • Support and later filings
  • Separation
  • Alimony and spousal support
  • Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements

Personal Injury

Injury claims usually go through an insurance company long before they reach a jury. We handle personal injury work with that in mind, including claims against medical institutions, and will take a case to trial when a settlement is not the right result. The phone consultation is free.

  • Injury claims and insurance disputes
  • Claims against medical institutions
  • Trial when settlement is not right
  • Road traffic accidents
  • Accidents at work
  • Slip, trip, and fall accidents
  • Product liability

Traffic Violations & Misdemeanors

A traffic citation or a misdemeanor can still cost you a license, a job, or a day in court. They are real legal work, and worth handling properly. If you have a court date anywhere in Alabama, bring the ticket and call. DUI defense has long been a concentration of our practice, and a DUI can be costly in fines and in limits on your driving, depending on how the case ends.

  • Driving under the influence (DUI)
  • Driving under the influence of a controlled substance
  • Driving without a license or with a suspended license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Expired or missing registration
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Reckless driving
  • Running a stop sign
  • Seat belt violations
  • Speeding and other moving violations
  • Public intoxication
  • Domestic violence
  • Court dates across Alabama

Trial & Litigation

Trial work is not a separate department for us. It is how the rest of the practice gets resolved when a case will not settle. Court appearances are a regular part of the week, and a matter that is already in litigation is familiar ground. Familiarity with Shelby County court procedures and personnel is an advantage when a case is presented to a judge or jury.

  • Cases that will not settle
  • Matters already in litigation
  • Shelby County courts
